Consider April–May or September–October as a planning starting point. Mountain visibility, rain and access can vary on any visit.

Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG). Confirm whether your first accommodation is in the city or Wulingyuan.

Why visit Zhangjiajie?

Zhangjiajie is a landscape trip that benefits from a little breathing room. Wulingyuan’s pillars and valleys need their own days, while Tianmen Mountain is a separate outing near the city. Choose your bases and walking plans before trying to fit every viewpoint into the same visit.

Experiences to make time for

Explore the Wulingyuan pillars

Build a route around areas such as Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, adapted to visibility and walking preferences.

Follow a forest valley

Consider Golden Whip Stream for a different perspective below the peaks.

Plan a separate Tianmen day

Visit Tianmen Mountain as its own excursion, checking the current route and operating notices.

Where to stay

Choose an area around your interests and onward journey. These are neighborhoods to consider, not hotel endorsements.

Wulingyuan town

Consider this base for consecutive days exploring the Wulingyuan scenic area.

Zhangjiajie city / Yongding

Consider this base for arrival, departure and a Tianmen Mountain visit.

Food to try

  • Chicken stewed with mushrooms
  • Western Hunan cured-meat dishes
  • Ciba — glutinous rice cakes

First-time tips

  • Treat Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon as separate scenic areas when planning tickets and transport.
  • Tell us your walking and stair preferences before requesting a guide or route help.
  • Keep the order of outdoor days flexible and check official weather-related operating notices.
A FLEXIBLE STARTING POINT

A flexible itinerary

Adjust the order and pace around your arrival, interests, weather and attraction availability. This is an idea for your trip, not a fixed tour.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive and choose your base

Transfer to Wulingyuan, settle in and check the next day’s route and conditions.

  2. Day 2

    Pillars and viewpoints

Explore a manageable Wulingyuan route around Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain.

  3. Day 3

    Valley and forest

Choose Golden Whip Stream or another suitable park route, then transfer toward the city if needed.

  4. Day 4

    Tianmen Mountain

Use a separate day for Tianmen Mountain, with the final route depending on availability and conditions.

Good to combine with

  • Fenghuang for an additional old-town stay
  • Furong for a separate regional stop

Questions, answered.

Is Tianmen Mountain inside Wulingyuan?

No. Plan them as separate scenic areas with different transport and entry arrangements.

Can I enjoy Zhangjiajie without long hikes?

Some routes use scenic-area transport, but walking, queues and stairs can still be involved. Share specific mobility needs so suitable options can be discussed.

Are clear mountain views guaranteed?

No. Cloud, rain and visibility are part of the landscape experience. A flexible schedule gives you more options.
